The Career Education Awards were established in 2010 to encourage and expand educational assistance initiatives by corporations and economic organizations. This year three Economy, Trade and Industry Minister’s Awards (one of which was a Grand Award), five Excellence Awards, and six Encouragement Awards were selected from 37 entries. The awards ceremony took place at the National Olympics Memorial Youth Center in Tokyo on January 17, 2017 as part of the FY 2016 Symposium for Partnerships for Career Education Promotion (sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare).

The Canon Group provides environment-focused classes to students across the country. In 2016, eight Group companies provided classes to 1,849 students at 27 elementary schools and their operational sites nationwide. The classes given by Canon’s staffs let students experience separating mixed materials using the natural properties of materials, such as attraction to magnets or floating / sinking in water. After the experiments, students are shown a video of Canon’s recycling process to further their understanding of Canon’s initiatives combatting environmental problems (such as garbage and resources).

In receiving the Excellence Award this year, Canon was lauded for the following aspects of its program.

  • The program is carried out nationwide by the entire Group and focuses on environmental themes that translate well in classrooms.
  • Canon continually strives to improve the teaching skills of its employee-instructors, having set up instructor training sessions and a certification system.
  • Because the experiments are set up for teams of four or five individuals, students consider the problem and possible solutions independently while talking and cooperating with their team and learn to fulfil a role within a group.

Canon is committed to taking every opportunity to extend its activities that convey the importance of the environment to children and to helping our youth who will lead the next generation.
