Sustainability Report 2016

Prepared in line with the G4 Sustainability Guidelines, the Canon Sustainability Report 2016 features two sections — For Society: Creating new value and solving social issues and For the Earth: Protection and conservation of the global environment — selected as Canon’s materiality. The report presents Canon’s approached and initiatives, based on consideration of both risks and opportunities, on three social issues (a safety and secure society, a better tomorrow for all, and the next generation of manufacturing), in the For Society section, and on four environmental issues (a low-carbon society, a circular economy, eliminating hazardous substances / preventing pollution, and a society in harmony with nature), in the For the Earth section.

The purpose of the awards is to promote environmental management and environmental communication initiatives by businesses and to improve the quality of environmental information disclosures, by presenting awards to outstanding environmental reports. The Award of Excellence in the Environmental Report category that Canon received is given to reports that advance the disclosure of appropriate information and serve as a model to others. Examples include reports by businesses that are willfully engaged in environmentally conscious management and reports that disclose information in easy-to-understand format.

In receiving the Award of Excellence this year, Canon was recognized for the following aspects of its Sustainability Report.

Reasons for receiving the Award:

  • Canon communicates in many different forms with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Canon surveys stakeholders before preparing the report and confirms stakeholders’ expectations for Canon and identifies materiality (pressing issues).
  • Canon’s statements about greenhouse gas emissions are credible because they undergo third-party verifications.

Canon posts information about its reports on its website, for the purpose of furthering stakeholders’ understanding of Canon’s environmental activities. Canon will continue to present its wide-ranging of Canon’s environmental activities in clear and engaging ways.
