ARTIST STATEMENT

Raw life

“Seeing” provides me with more pleasure than anything else, and at the same time, it is a mysterious happening to me that arouses never-ending curiosity. Photography is a valuable, rare means not only to intensify the pleasure of “seeing,” but also to record happenings permanently by ensuring that “seeing” can be repeated. If “seeing” encompasses a riddle that is so obvious that it seems to be nonsense, to enjoy photographing continuously and seeing repeatedly will solve those riddles and create more riddles.

Selecting judge: Daido Moriyama

He has a keen eye and capacity like someone who has committed a convincing crime. His work is so overwhelming. He photographs different worlds and subjects, but as a whole, it has a feeling of equivalency. That equivalent quality is remarkable. He shoots the subject straight when he sees it, not carelessly but sharply. This stance of his photographing does not raise the question of distinguishing the digital from the analogue or a bias towards either of them. The ink-jet prints are overwhelming in both quality and quantity. Ultimately, one's ability is the point.
