There are many ways to capture a city. I decided to try looking at a city by following the river that flows through it. This is the concept behind this series of photos. Water is the source of all life. At the same time, flood control has always been a major issue for creating and maintaining cities. Rivers have nurtured human civilizations, and in turn, humanity has often constructed the nature of rivers.
My work for this exhibition is a collection of photographs of scenes along both banks of the Arakawa River, from its upper reaches in Oku-Chichibu to its estuary at Kasai Rinkai Park.
Arakawa River literally means “raging river” and has flooded many times in the past, greatly affecting people's lives. I thought that by going down the Arakawa River, which flows along the edge of Tokyo and empties into Tokyo Bay, I would be able to catch a glimpse of one side of Tokyo.
Thirty-four 600 x 1600 mm inkjet prints
The 34 super enlarged photographs make us feel that the seemingly exaggerated title — Yes, The River Knows — Arakawa River — is not exaggerated at all. Over a period of four years, the artist photographed both banks of the Arakawa River, from upriver in Oku-Chichibu to downriver in Kasai, for this work that meticulously documents people's activities in and around the river.
I believe these photographs stand out as special places like nowhere else because of how well they blend the relaxed, hazy time of flowing alongside a river without signs of flooding or other dangers with the time inherent to panoramic photographs that arises from gazing at, almost surveying, the broad horizontal frame. The structure of the work is also attractive, with the river acting like a binding cord that gently pulls each photograph together. The scenes along the Arakawa River created by the artist's highly orthodox use of photography are punctuated by the artist's commitment to observation and documentation.
