ARTIST STATEMENT

I Couldn’t Approach

Things within reach are good. Things that can be touched are good. There’s a world very close by. Gaze at it slowly and hold it gently. Hold something that looks ready to break in your hand. Hold it tight and brush it against your cheek, and at times, throw it down and trample it. Then it will come out. Wave after wave, it comes out. No matter how much you accept, tears come out, oil comes out.

Selecting judge: Nobuyoshi Araki

I like the title. In the photos, it’s evident in a straightforward way that she couldn’t approach. The owl is out of focus, but that adds to the reality. When facing the death of the person you love most or an important person to you, you feel really open. Her really pure feelings towards her Papa’s death are reflected in this pure photography.
