ARTIST STATEMENT

You’re running. I’m waiting with Dumbo ears.

Lots of food on a large table. How good it tastes may depend on how it’s placed or how it’s eaten. There’s so much I can’t eat it all. Not only that, the room is too warm. So, what should I do? In my case, while in a state of confusion, I simply give some away or display ut. It seems that rather than eating a meal, I’ve been putting together a strange puzzle. This kind of uncontrollable situation seems very picturesque to me, and it’s something I’m really interested in now. I hope New Cosmos of Photography will be a venue for creators who don’t have access to media yet. There are many competitions for commercial and journalistic photos, but there still aren’t many for a wide range of content like this. I hope and anticipate that future creators will continue to have this opportunity. As recipient of this is the award in the first year, I am very honored.

Selecting judge: Fumio Nanjo

Although each shot has a different image, the atmosphere is consistent, and the presence of an inner world can be felt. Not too hot, not too cold, the distance from the subject is clearly captured. I is also very good in terms of technique. I can feel the connection between each photo, and the story is ambiguous and loaded with mystery. A mysterious aspect is important.

PROFILE

Yuki Onodera

1992 Won an Excellence Award at the 1st New Cosmos of Photography (selected by Fumio Nanjo)

Yuki Onodera was born in Tokyo in 1962. In 1993, she established a studio in Paris and began to work internationally. Onodera’s experimental work, which does not fit within schemas of “photography,” often poses two questions: what is photography, and what can be done through it? She uses any possible method to realize her works, whether this means taking photographs with a marble inside her camera, or creating a story out of a legend and traveling to the ends of the earth to shoot it. Onodera is known her two-meter-high darkroom prints by herself, oil painting on a photography, as well as for other original hands-on methods. Her work is held in collections around the world, including those of Centre Georges Pompidou, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Shanghai Art Museum and The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Among other locations, her solo exhibitions have been held at The National Museum of Art, Osaka (2005), Shanghai Art Museum (2006), The Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (2010), The Museum of Photography, Seoul (2010) and Musée Nicéphore Niépce, France (2011) , Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris (2015).
