Taking advantages of the characteristics of the RF mount that offer a high degree of freedom in lens design—an internal mount diameter of 54 mm, the same as the EF mount, and a short back focus1 distinctive of mirrorless cameras—the RF85mm F1.2 L USM achieves overwhelmingly high image quality2 from the center of the image field to the peripheral areas, even when the aperture is wide open. What’s more, featuring a large f/1.2 aperture, the lens realizes beautiful, large background blurring.

Through the combination of a proprietary BR lens3 and a UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) lens, the RF85mm F1.2 L USM significantly reduces color fringing, which can easily occur with wide-aperture lenses, and realizes an exceedingly high level of correction for chromatic aberration. Additionally, employing a special Air Sphere Coating (ASC), the lens reduces the occurrence of flare and ghosting when shooting backlit subjects, to realize high-resolution, high-contrast descriptive performance from the center of the image field to the peripheral areas, even when shooting with the aperture wide open.

In addition to a focus ring, the lens features a control ring that can be customized to adjust such settings as exposure compensation and aperture value. Settings can be adjusted using the control ring while confirming images through the electronic viewfinder to make possible even more intuitive, comfortable shooting.

1 A short distance between the optical axis from the vertex of the rear lens element to the imaging plane when focused to infinity.
2 Realizes the highest level of optical performance (MTF) when the aperture is wide open among autofocus-capable 85 mm-focal-length lenses for interchangeable-lens cameras (DSLR and mirrorless) sold by Canon before May 8, 2019.
3 Blue Spectrum Refractive optical element: a composite lens comprising an organic optical material sandwiched between convex and concave glass elements.
