Thanks to its ultra-wide-angle focal length of 15mm, the new lens enables photo and video in confined and narrow spaces where users cannot distance themselves from subjects, and also allows for unique forms of expression through dynamic use of perspective. In addition, a 30mm focal length makes possible visual expression from natural focal lengths and perspectives with pleasing background blur. By covering a range of 15-30mm, the new lens is ideal for a variety of photographic and videographic styles, including landscape, architecture, everyday and portrait.

The new lens features an optical design that incorporates 13 elements in 11 groups, including one plastic-mold aspherical lens and two UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) lenses. The effective placement of the plastic-molded aspherical lens elements makes possible a smaller optical configuration, and in turn, a more affordable lens that retains superb descriptive performance in a compact size measuring approximately 88.4mm in length and weighing approximately 390g.

The lens delivers up to 5.5 stops1 of image stabilization (IS) and when attached to the EOS R series cameras with in-body IS2 (IBIS), the lens and camera IS work in conjunction—when paired with the EOS R5 (released in July 2020), the lens achieves up to 7.0 stops3 of IS. This enables smooth capture of images that would otherwise be difficult to achieve through handheld shooting, such as nighttime photography and shots with slow shutter speeds.

1 Based on CIPA standards. When used with the EOS R at a focal length of 30 mm. Yaw/Pitch axes.
2 List of cameras: EOS R5, EOS R6 (released in August 2020), EOS R3 (released in November 2021), EOS R7 (released in June 2022). As of July 12, 2022.
3 Based on CIPA standards. When used with the EOS R5 at a focal length of 30 mm. Yaw/Pitch axes.
