The Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, developed as successor to the popular EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM large-diameter, standard-zoom lens (released in September 2002), features a fully updated design centered on optical performance. Offering superior high-quality imaging capabilities and enhanced durability and reliability, the new lens delivers a level of performance befitting an L (luxury)-series model, all while achieving a more compact, lightweight body design.
Compared with its predecessor, the EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM delivers significant improvements in image quality thanks to an optical system that makes even more liberal use of special optical materials.* Comprising 18 elements in 13 groups, the lens construction has been comprehensively updated, newly incorporating a Super UD (ultra-low dispersion) lens element and including three high-resolution aspherical elements and two UD lens elements. In addition to effectively correcting for chromatic aberrations that tend to occur in the periphery of an image, the design makes possible high-resolution, high-contrast imaging performance across the entire zoom range and image area while minimizing the incidence of ghosting and flare.
Capable of withstanding harsh shooting conditions, the Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM features a redesigned mechanical structure realizing enhanced reliability and durability. Such areas as the lens’s mount, switch panel and zoom ring employ a dust-proof and moisture-proof structure while a fluorine coating, applied to the front and back surfaces of the first and last lens elements, respectively, delivers improved oil and water resistance. Also, in response to the demanding needs of professional photographers, the new lens includes such features as a ring-type USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor) and high-speed CPU, as well as an optimized AF algorithm for fast auto-focusing performance.
The Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L II USM measures 113 mm in length and, at 805 grams, weighs approximately 15% less than its predecessor. The lens offers exceptional operability through the incorporation of such features as a focusing ring, a zoom ring and a zoom ring lock lever that prevents accidental movement of the zoom ring.
