The new super-telephoto zoom lens’s new optical design comprises 21 elements in 16 groups, including a fluorite lens element, which features exceptional optical properties that minimize the occurrence of color aberrations, and a super UD (ultra-low dispersion) lens element. The design makes possible superior imaging performance across the entire zoom range as well as from the center of the image to the outer edges. Furthermore, the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM employs Canon’s newly developed ASC (Air Sphere Coating) lens-coating technology, which offers advanced anti-reflective properties for incident light that enters the lens from a nearly vertical angle to greatly reduce the occurrence of flaring and ghosting.
The new Canon super-telephoto zoom lens delivers image stabilization equivalent to approximately 4 shutter-speed stops,* a significant improvement over the 1.5 shutter-speed stops* offered by its predecessor. Furthermore, in addition to incorporating an IS Mode 2, an image stabilization setting also employed in the previous model that is ideal for sports and other situations where panning is necessary, the new EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM includes an IS Mode 3, which provides optimal image stabilization when capturing subjects that move in an unpredictable manner.
The new lens’s zoom function has been updated from the previous model’s linear-extension-type zoom system to a rotational-type system, enabling users to maintain optimal camera balance during handheld shooting. Realizing exceptional operability, the EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM incorporates such features as an adjustment ring allowing users to fine-tune the zoom ring’s torque according to their preferences, and a new independent-construction tripod mount that can be detached even while the lens is mounted to the camera.
* Based on CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) standards. When used with the EOS-1D X digital SLR camera at a 400 mm focal length.
