The EF70–200 f/4L IS II USM telephoto zoom lens is a renewed version of the approximately 11-year-old EF70–200 f/4L IS USM (released in November 2006) and is the first EF telephoto zoom lens1 to realize image stabilization equivalent to five shutter speed stops2. While maintaining the optical design of its predecessor—20 elements in 15 groups, including such special optical materials as a fluorite lens and two Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) lenses—the lens achieves a minimum focusing distance of 1 m, compared with the 1.2 m distance of its predecessor, thanks to changes in the shape and positioning of the lens elements. Additionally, through the optimization of lens coatings the occurrence of flaring and ghosting has been reduced.
