Description

This is the spirit of Lady Rokujo, a character from the novel The Tale of Genji. The former lover of Prince Genji, she went mad with jealousy. Her emotional torment and descent into madness are reflected by the curves of her figure and those of the garment‘s pattern, which shows wildly blooming wisteria and spider webs. This work is unusual in the oeuvre of Shoen, who is known mainly for her depictions of beautiful women.
