Description

The lower second room of the abbot‘s chambers of Tenkyuin is commonly called Asagao-no-ma ("Morning glory room"). The paintings on all 18 sliding panels depict rough-hewn bamboo fences and flowers, creating a rhythmical curve. Blossoms of clematis florida and clematis patens are painted on the north side, with morning glories on the west side. Clematis patens, contrasted against the mountain in the background, are also painted on the south side, while white lilies are painted in sharp contrast with the gold background on the south side. All these paintings come together to make the whole room into an elegant, appealing, and fresh space.
