Tenkyuin temple, a subtemple of Myoshinji Temple

Description

Tenkyuin, a subtemple of Myoshinji Temple, was erected by Tenkyuin, the third daughter of Ikeda Nobuteru, who served Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The painting on the sliding panels in the abbot‘s chambers of Tenkyuin was made when the subtemple was constructed. It is considered an extremely important historical work as well as a work of art. One of 152 painted sliding panels and cedar doors in the abbot‘s chambers, "Tiger and Bamboo" embellishes the chamber in which Buddhist services are held. "Tiger and Bamboo," which spans all 20 panels in the chambers, depicts tigers in various attitudes. Some are roaring heavenward, while the cubs fawn at their mother's tail. Fresh green bamboo and bamboo shoots, exquisitely arranged, attract the eye.
