Canon announces conclusion of patent infringement dispute in Germany

TOKYO, August 26, 2015—Canon Inc. today announced the successful conclusion of a patent infringement dispute (4a O 72/14) in Germany pending before the District Court of Düsseldorf against Mr. Thomas Zenkel, owner of the domain “”, concerning the German portion of Canon's European patent 2 087 407 relating to, inter alia, a drum unit. The lawsuit concerned among other things, the offering and sale of certain toner cartridges with said drum units for use in various models of Canon and Hewlett-Packard German laser beam printers.

In its ruling, dated June 11, 2015, the Court decided that Mr. Zenkel acting under “” is prohibited from using, selling and offering the infringing photosensitive drum units in Germany and ordered Mr. Zenkel to recall said products from the distribution channel. A declaratory decision on liability for damages is also included in the decision. The decision became final, while other cases based on this patent are still pending.
