The RF800mm F11 IS STM delivers the world’s most compact body for the focal length at affordable price point, as part of a new concept intended to give a wider range of users the opportunity to enjoy super-telephoto photography. Realizing design that is easily both portable and highly durable, the lens is ideal for capturing images of such subjects as wild animals and aircraft or events including sports matches.

This lens includes such features as DO lenses1, fixed f/11 apertures and housing that comprises resin-based plastics, making possible body that is more compact and lightweight than conventional super-telephoto lens. The RF800mm F11 IS STM weighs approximately 1,260g—the lightest weight of the classes worldwide2, making them easily portable. What’s more, this lens have collapsible body that can be partially retracted to become easier to store and carry.

The new lens employs a new optical configuration which includes a dual-layer diffractive optical (DO) lens element, effectively suppressing the chromatic and other optical aberrations that frequently occur in telephoto lens. As a result, the lens deliver superb descriptive ability in compact and lightweight design.

The RF800mm F11 IS STM processes a number of features that make photography more pleasant and enjoyable, including image stabilization to assist handheld shooting, a lead-screw type stepper motor (STM) that enables fast and accurate AF3 when shooting still images and smooth AF when shooting video, and a control ring users can customize to adjust various settings such as exposure compensation.

1 A lens made using diffractive optical elements. Canon was the first company to commercialize diffractive optics for use in a camera lens that was introduced in 2001.
2 Among autofocus-compatible interchangeable lenses for interchangeable-lens cameras, the RF800mm F11 IS STM achieves the world’s lightest weight for an 800mm focal length lens.
3 The area within which the camera equipped with these lenses can perform AF distance calculations are 40% and 60% of the horizontal and vertical area of the camera’s screen, respectively.
