In response to the recent growing need for equipment that combines high performance and mobility, following the RF 35 mm F1.4 L VCM (released in July 2024), Canon will respond to versatile user needs by expanding the single-focus lens series with an aperture of f/1.4, which will contribute not only to still photography but also to full-scale video production. The RF24mm F1.4 L VCM combines wide-angle shooting with a focal length of 24 mm and an f/1.4 aperture to realize outstanding bokeh expressions with a dynamic sense of perspective. The RF50mm F1.4 L VCM, on the other hand, offers a natural angle of view close to that of human eyes, allowing users to capture the subjects with vivid highlights in a wide range of situations including portraits and snapshots.

Both models feature bright f/1.4 apertures so that users can shoot even in dark situations such as at night or indoors without increasing ISO sensitivity, resulting in clear still images and videos with minimal noise. In addition, by effectively arranging aspheric lenses and UD lenses*1 in their optical designs, and by adopting special coating technologies such as ASC (Air Sphere Coating) and SWC (Subwavelength Structure Coating), aberrations that cause image deterioration are reduced to achieve high image quality across the entire screen.

Their mechanisms have been further enhanced to offer more comfortable shooting. For instance, the electronic floating focus control, which combines a VCM (voice coil motor) suitable for driving heavy large-aperture lenses and a Nano USM (ultrasonic motor), enables excellent focusing. When combined with the dual-pixel CMOS AF included in EOS R-series cameras, the new system allows for not only fast, accurate AF, but also quiet and smooth focusing, which is especially effective in video shooting. Moreover, both lenses have the same iris ring (aperture ring) as the RF24-105 mm F2.8 L IS USM Z (released in December 2023) and RF35mm F1.4 L VCM*2, which is especially useful for manual aperture control during video shooting.

*1 Lenses made of UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass material
*2 VCM is an actuator that gains kinetic energy through a magnetic field produced with electrical energy. The coil moves back and forth in the magnetic field created by the driving magnet. The focus lens unit fixed to the coil moves linearly in the magnetic field.
