Leveraging the characteristics of the RF mount that offer a high degree of freedom in lens design, including a large internal mount aperture and short back focus1, the new lens realizes a focal length range 100mm greater than the EF100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS II USM (released in December 2014) to a range of 100mm at the wide end to 500mm at the telephoto end. When paired with an EOS R system camera, the lens forms part of a lightweight and easily portable camera system.
Featuring an optical design that incorporates 20 elements in 14 groups, including six UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) lenses2 and one Super UD lens2, the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM mitigates chromatic aberrations from the center of the lens to the periphery, to achieve high image quality across the entire zoom range. Additionally, employing a special Air Sphere Coating (ASC), the lens reduces the occurrence of flare and ghosting.
When attached to the EOS R5 (released in July, 2020), the lens’ image stabilization (IS) works together with the EOS R5’s in-body image stabilization to deliver up to 6.0 stops3 of image stabilization. When paired with the EOS R (released in October 2018), the lens achieves up to 5.0 stops4 of IS.

2 UD lenses incorporate lens elements made using UD (ultra-low dispersion) glass. Super UD lenses realize significant improvements in performance over UD lenses. Comprising two UD lenses, a super UD lens produces results with almost the same as the characteristics as fluorite.
