With an optical configuration comprising 17 lens elements in 12 lens groups, including three UD lenses1, the RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM helps mitigate all manner of aberrations that impair image quality, resulting in high image quality from the center to the periphery. In addition, a fast f/1.8 aperture make possible exquisite background blur effects and bring subjects and backgrounds closer together—a valuable attribute of medium-telephoto lenses—that enable users to capture portrait photos that make subjects stand out and create a sense of depth. What’s more, the adoption of a circular 9-blade aperture help render points of light in the background of images as beautiful blurred circles.
The RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM provides 5.5 stops2 of image stabilization, and when paired with EOS R series cameras3, work in conjunction with the camera to provide a total of 8.0 stops of IS (when used with the EOS R3, released in November 2021). As a result, the lens helps minimize camera shake even when during hand-held shooting in dark environments.
The new lens also features two “lens function buttons”, a first for Canon’s non-super-telephoto lenses. With default settings, they function as AF stop buttons. When a button is pressed while shooting with AF, users can temporarily disable AF and maintain a desired shooting distance and avoid AF“searching” as it follows a subject. What’s more, the lens is also equipped with a control ring to which users can assign such functions as exposure correction or aperture adjustment. Through the electronic viewfinder (EVF) of the attached camera, users can inspect post-capture images while operating the control ring, thus allowing for more comfortable and intuitive shooting.
