The miniaturization of the IS (Image Stabilization Mechanism) unit, adoption of a collapsible structure, and utilization of camera-side electronic warping correction have enabled a compact and lightweight design with a total length of approximately 91.0 mm (when stored) and a weight of approximately 445 g, while achieving an open aperture value of f/2.8 over the entire zoom range.
In addition to excellent portability, the ultra-wide zoom range with a 16 mm to 28 mm focal length makes it possible to capture a wide field of view in a confined space or within a building, or capture a vast landscape with dynamic perspective. Its optical design, with a large-diameter replica aspherical lens placed in the foreground, reduces the various aberrations that cause image quality degradation through a lens grouping of 16 lenses in 13 groups including two aspherical lenses and four UD lenses*1, and achieves high image quality close to that of an L lens across the entire screen.
Users can enjoy the excellent expressive power of this lens through comfortable shooting. Equipped with a lead screw-type STM, this lens achieves fast, high-precision AF for still images and quiet, smooth AF for moving images. The in-lens optical image stabilization mechanism provides 5.5 stops*2 of image stabilization. When combined with an EOS R series camera equipped with the in-body image stabilization mechanism, the cooperative control*3 between them provides 8.0 stops*4 of image stabilization in the center of the screen and 7.5 stops5 of image stabilization around the edges.
Additionally, the combination also supports peripheral coordination control*5 to reduce image blur in the screen periphery, which occurs especially at wide angles, to enable comfortable shooting even in hand-held situations where camera shaking is likely to occur.
*1 Lenses made of UD (Ultra Low Dispersion) glass

*4 Based on CIPA2024 standards. When combined with EOS R1 (released in November 2024). At focal length of 28 mm. Yaw/Pitch/Roll direction.
*5 Available only when shooting still images. For information on cameras with peripheral cooperative control function, please refer to the official Canon website.
