The RF20mm F1.4 L VCM is capable of capturing dynamic expressions, transcending the way the naked eye sees the scenes or subjects by combining rich bokeh visuals with an f/1.4 aperture and ultra-wide angle shooting with a fixed focal length of 20 mm. Even in low light environments such as nighttime, its bright aperture also achieves clear still images and video with minimal noise. Furthermore, by attaching a rear lens filter*1, users can capture scenes with dot-shaped light sources such as starry skies or illuminated landscapes with limited distortion. The lens also boasts an optical design consisting of aspherical lenses, UD lenses*2, and Super UD lenses which have been configured effectively and features special coating technology as well as BR optical elements*3, thereby reducing various aberrations that cause image deterioration and ensuring high image quality across the entire screen.
Its superb focusing employs a rear focusing system that accommodates a VCM*4 (voice coil motor), which is suitable for driving the hefty focus lens unit. This feature, in combination with the EOS R Series’ Dual Pixel CMOS AF, enables high-speed and high-accuracy AF in addition to quiet and smooth focus adjustment when shooting video. Its optical design also reduces “focus breathing,” a fluctuation in the angle of view that occurs in conjunction with focus operation during video shoots. The lens can aid full-fledged video production by helping users shoot footage in stable composition with very few unintended changes to the angle of view.
The RF20mm F1.4 L VCM has been designed to be lightweight and compact for superb mobility, with a weight of approximately 519 g and overall length of approximately 99.3 mm. In addition, the lens has the same total length and front filter diameter as the existing f/1.4 fixed focal length lenses, thereby reducing hassle at shooting locations when using the new lens with other lenses. It is also equipped with an iris ring, thus making it possible to manually adjust the aperture mainly when shooting video.
*1 Contains a rear lens filter holder. Only a single filter with a thickness of 0.2 mm or less may be used. Please remove the holder when filter is not in use, as it may result in ghosting depending on light conditions.
*2 A lens that utilizes UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass
*3 BR (Blue spectrum Refractive) optical element. It greatly refracts blue light (light with shorter wavelength) and improves chromatic aberration correction.
*4 An actuator that converts electric energy to kinetic in magnetic fields. As the coil moves back and forth in the magnetic field generated by the driving magnet, the focus lens unit connected to the coil moves linearly.
