Named “Best DSLR Professional / High Res,” the Canon EOS-5DS R features an “impressive” approximately 50.6 megapixel full-frame sensor that the TIPA jury noted rivals those of larger medium-format digital cameras. The judges also highlighted the camera’s 5 frame-per-second (fps) continuous shooting of full-resolution still images and Full HD video capture at 30 fps. The EOS-5DS R is equipped with Dual DIGIC 6 image processors, a newly developed mirror vibration control system and time-release lag settings to further suppress camera shake and allow the camera to realize the full potential of its sensor. It has a 100% coverage 3.2-inch 1.04 million dot Intelligent ClearView II LCD viewfinder that can display a variety of shooting information. The jury also pointed out that the camera sports a 150,000 pixel RGB-IR metering sensor that utilizes EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) AF and that AF performance is enhanced by the 61-point high-density reticular sensor.

The camera achieves an outstanding multi-pixel capacity of 50.6 megapixels as a full-frame 35mm SLR camera. It also employs a camera blur reduction mirror drive mechanism to support the multi-pixel photography and a high precision autofocus system, EOS iTR AF. It is developed as a multi-pixel camera that is easily used by the consumer and it expands the horizon of the photographic expressions.

Selected for this year’s “Best Photo / Video Professional Camera” award, Canon’s EOS-1D X Mark II flagship-model DSLR offers impressive specifications. The camera is equipped with an approximately 20.2 megapixel 35 mm full-frame Canon CMOS sensor and achieves high-speed continuous shooting of approximately 14 fps, and up to 16 fps in Live View mode. The TIPA judges noted that the Dual DIGIC 6+ image processors enable high-speed writing of up to 170 RAW images and 81 RAW+JPEG images per burst. Thanks to Dual Pixel CMOS AF, in which all of the CMOS sensor’s pixels include both imaging and the phase-difference detection AF functions, the EOS-1D X Mark II is capable of high-speed AF tracking. The camera features an improved 61-point viewfinder AF and an improved AI Servo III+ predictive AF algorithm, and also achieves 4K 60p video shooting, and Full HD 120 fps high frame rate image capture suitable for slow motion video capture. With the optional Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E8B, compatible with the new IEEE802.11ac wireless LAN standard, data can be sent wirelessly at high speeds across the 5 GHz band.

Calling the EOS-1D X Mark II “the fastest DSLR ever,” the EISA jury was impressed by the camera’s ability to capture moving subjects at a continuous shooting speed of 14 images per seconds. The judges noted that “Canon has increased still image quality significantly” compared with the previous model and also highlighted the camera’s improved autofocus function and its “much more advanced” high-quality 4K video function. With its combined improvements, coupled with a “rugged body,” the jury declared the EOS-1D X Mark II “an even better all-round camera than its predecessor.”

The EISA jury declared the EOS 80D “more than just another SLR,” lauding Canon’s incorporation of “many innovative functions for photo and video” while also heralding the camera’s “class-leading image quality.” The judges noted that the 80D’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF “sports 45 cross-type sensors” and “enables fast focusing during live view and video,” and highlighted how the EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM kit lens works together with the new PZ-E1 power zoom adapter to provide video support. The judges were also won over by the camera’s “high resolution vari-angle LCD,” which allows touchscreen operation.

The camera features a 24–100 mm (35 mm film equivalent) 4.2x optical zoom lens with a nine-blade iris and an aperture of f/1.8 at the wide-angle end and f/2.8 at the telephoto end that achieves rich tonal gradations and exceptional blur characteristics across the entire zoom range. The G5 X features an EVF (electronic viewfinder) with approximately 2.36 million dots and approximately 100% coverage that employs an organic EL (electroluminescent) panel and has a refresh rate of up to 120 fps. A built-in eye sensor, which has a range of approximately 22 mm, can even detect users wearing glasses and switches display from the EVF to the 3-inch vari-angle LCD touchscreen. Additionally, the camera’s hot shoe is compatible with all Speedlite flashes in the EOS system.

EF35mm f/1.4L II USMEuropean Professional DSLR Lens, EISA Awards
The EISA judges found the EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM to be “the best 35mm lens on the market.” In addition to delivering image sharpness that is “unbelievably high, both at the center and at the edges, even at f/1.4,” the jury lauded the “very efficient correction of axial chromatic aberration” afforded by its Blue Refractive (BR) lens, its SubWavelength Structure Coating (SWC), which reduces both flare and ghost images, as well as the “very attractive bokeh” created by the lens’s 9-bladed aperture diaphragm.

Along with the M-series lenses, the EOS M5’s elegant knurling imparts a sense of functional beauty. The camera’s conical main dial positioned on the slope of the grip is its most outstanding design feature, harmonizing beautifully with its ergonomically carved body. Of particular noteworthiness is how the centers of the EOS M5’s EVF, touch-screen panel, hot shoe and tripod socket all align with the optical axis of the lens—an incredible feat for such a compact design.

Image sensor technology that achieves high image quality and smooth autofocus (AF) in digital cameras using a phase-difference detection AF method. Previous attempts were made to achieve smooth AF during video capture through the splitting of sensor pixel photodiodes. However, this resulted in a noticeable decrease in the quality of captured images. Success was ultimately achieved by designing the section where the photodiodes are split so that their sensitivities overlap to achieve sensitivity characteristics similar to conventional non-split pixels.
