The tournament takes its name from Lord Bledisloe, who served as Governor-General of New Zealand from 1930-1935, during which time he contributed to the growth of the New Zealand national team and presented the tournament cup. This battle between two of rugby's leading teams has long been one of the sport's most prestigious tournaments.
