The Camera Grand Prix, which began in 1984 and was held this year for the 42nd time, is one of the most prestigious awards in Japan for cameras and lenses. It is hosted by the Camera Journal Press Club*, an association of technical editors from magazines and websites specializing in photography and cameras within Japan. The nominees were products released in Japan during the previous fiscal year from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2025. The Camera of the Year award is an honor bestowed to the single most outstanding camera model based on a vote by all 57 Selection Committee members. The recipients of the Readers Award for camera and lens are selected based on an online poll by ordinary users.

The EOS R1, which was designed to meet the demand of professional users, was praised for its high comprehensive abilities thanks to the use of Accelerated Capture, the new image processing system, and deep learning technology, the application of Cross-type AF—a first for Dual Pixel CMOS AF—and a newly developed electronic viewfinder. In addition, receiving the Readers Award Camera and Readers Award Lens proved that the EOS R5 Mark II, which boasts high shooting performance and mobility for still images and video, and the RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z, which features an outstanding optical design and operability to comfortably shoot both still images and video, have both been widely acknowledged for their innovative advancements.

Going forward, Canon will continue to refine its proprietary imaging technologies while bringing fulfillment and excitement to people’s daily lives as well as promoting the spread of photo and video culture by providing products, services, and solutions that meet its customers’ diverse needs.

Reason for selection of EOS R1 as Camera of the Year by the Grand Prix 2025 Selection Committee

The Canon EOS R1 is the first flagship model of Canon's mirrorless camera "EOS R System” and is a camera that realizes high performance to meet the demands of professionals. The EOS R1 achieves both high-speed continuous shooting and high sensitivity performance thanks to the newly developed full-size back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor, image engine "DIGIC X", and engine system "DIGIC Accelerator". When using the electronic shutter, continuous shooting at a maximum of approximately 40 frames per second is possible, and rolling distortion is greatly reduced. In addition, cross AF is realized over the entire focusing area, and subject tracking performance has been dramatically improved with Dual Pixel Intelligent AF. It also has eye-gaze input AF and "Action Priority" functions. In addition, the camera is equipped with a number of features that will revolutionize the shooting experience, such as a high-definition electronic viewfinder with approximately 9.44 million dots and an "in-camera upscaling" function that generates high-resolution images of up to approximately 96 million pixels. These advanced technologies and high level of perfection were highly evaluated, and the camera was selected as the winner of the Camera Grand Prix 2025 Grand Prize.
