Canon obtains third-party verification for IEC 63372-based avoided emissions calculation
TOKYO, June 10, 2026—Canon Inc. announced today that it has become the first company in Japan to obtain verification from the Sustainable Management Promotion Organization (SuMPO) for the calculation of a product's avoided emissions based on the international standard IEC 63372.1,2
Canon calculated avoided emissions for its OCT-R1 ophthalmic imaging device in accordance with IEC 63372, which was issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in January. The standard covers avoided emissions associated with electrical and electronic products, services, and systems. Canon also plans to calculate avoided emissions for other products.
Companies are increasingly expected not only to reduce emissions but also demonstrate how their products and services contribute to further emission reductions. The avoided emissions metric is intended to provide stakeholders with objective information and facilitates evaluations by financial institutions and other organizations.
Before the introduction of IEC 63372, companies individually calculated avoided emissions based on guidelines issued by industry associations or other sector-specific frameworks, but the methodologies used were not necessarily aligned. To address this issue, the IEC led discussions on international standardization, and Canon participated in this rule-making process.
The OCT-R1 integrates optical coherence tomography (OCT) and a retinal camera into a single unit. SuMPO verified that, compared with the baseline scenario using separate OCT and retinal camera devices (calculation based on Canon’s OCT-A1 and CR-2 AF), the OCT-R1’s integrated design can be expected to result in lower life-cycle emissions. SuMPO also confirmed that Canon’s calculation was conducted in accordance with IEC 63372.
