LECTURE
Hiroshi Nomura is a fixture in photography, contemporary art, publishing, and other creative scenes. After serving as a judge for the 2020 (43rd edition) New Cosmos of Photography, he gave a lecture on photography at the 2020 New Cosmos of Photography Exhibition. His lecture provided insight into the process he goes through to form his ironic works that have charmed and captivated so many viewers. Nomura also discussed his ideas and their sources, while presenting slides of his work, ranging from his Excellence Award-winning work through to his newest works.
Nomura was interviewed by Takashi Kakishima, owner of Poetic Scape, a Nakameguro gallery.

Tomomichi Nakamura — winner of the 2019 (42nd) New Cosmos of Photography Grand Prize — created his award-winning work “Like Ants” after the death of his father. Nakamura, who has received high praise for his expressive activities primarily in animation, called this work “a video work that does not move, formed using still images”. Photographer Rineke Dijkstra, the judge who selected his work, praised the way Nakamura beautifully expresses his emotions “which are complex, oppressive, and melancholic at the same time”. For this year's solo exhibition, he presented “Ants”, which adds new works to his series. We spoke to him about his creative intentions and his thoughts on expression.

After winning the Excellence Award at the first New Cosmos of Photography contest in 1991, Yuki Onodera relocated to Paris and has been widely successful around the world. And since claiming France's most prestigious prize, the Prix Niépce in 2006, she has made great strides in contemporary photography and art, producing many innovative works. Onodera was invited to judge the New Cosmos of Photography in 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she judged entries online instead of in person.
In this wide-ranging interview, we spoke with her about her impressions of the entries at the New Cosmos of Photography selection meeting, her own activities, and the sources of her ideas.

Song-Nian Ang won the 2018 (41st) New Cosmos of Photography Grand Prize. His winning work “Hanging Heavy On My Eyes” was a brilliantly innovative work that represented Singapore's air pollution index as different gradations of gray by converting the daily index numbers into exposure times. A year after his victory, Ang debuted a new video work entitled “Artificial Conditions — Something To Grow Into” at his solo exhibition. The English photographer Paul Graham is known for his use of color photography that astutely explores the social fabric of our lives. Travel has been an important catalyst for his work from the early 1980s, when he started working seriously as a photographer.
