Canon won a fourth-straight Award of Excellence in the Environmental Report category for the Canon Sustainability Report 2017. The award was presented at the 21st Environmental Communication Awards ceremony (co-sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment and the Global Environmental Forum) held on February 21 at the Shinagawa Prince Hotel in Tokyo.

The Environmental Communication Awards were founded in 1997 to recognize outstanding reports on the environment and environmental activities, as a means of promoting environmental management and communication initiatives by businesses and improving the quality of environmental information disclosures.
The Canon Sustainability Report 2017’s Environment section provided specific examples of Canon’s initiatives in the areas of Contributing to a Low-Carbon Society, Contributing to a Circular Economy, Eliminating Hazardous Substances and Preventing Pollution, and Contributing to a Society in Harmony with Nature. It also highlighted the relationship between these initiatives and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015.
The Award of Excellence, Canon received in the Environmental Report category, is given to reports advancing the disclosure of information in a way that can serve as a model for others. Examples include reports by businesses that enthusiastically engage in eco-conscious management and reports that disclose information in a clear and understandable fashion. Canon was praised this year for “taking on the low-carbon society and circular economy as high-priority environment issues for your company and providing thorough explanations consistent with these topics backed by a wealth of data” and for being “a superlative example of a report that follows the GRI ( Global Reporting Initiative ) Guidelines.”
